Your First Weightlifting Meet: What to Expect
So you’ve decided to compete in your first weightlifting meet. Exciting! Here’s what the journey looks like from start to finish.
Registration and the Start List
First things first: register for the event. Depending on the meet, you may need your USA Weightlifting number this is typically required if you’re trying to qualify for nationals, but most local meets will let you compete without one. About two weeks before the meet, they’ll release a start list that tells you your weigh in time and when you’ll be lifting. Mark your calendar and plan accordingly.
What to Bring
Pack your singlet, belt, shoes, and plenty of snacks. For your post weigh in meal, choose something simple and easy to digest, like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Here’s the key: test this meal well in advance so you know your stomach handles it on meet day. Bring extra snacks to munch on between lifts, something with fast digesting carbs like gummies works great. Also pack water and bring a fan if you tend to run hot. You’ll be there for several hours, so being comfortable matters.
Arriving and Weigh In
Show up about 15 to 20 minutes before your weigh in window starts. Find a restroom and put on your singlet when you arrive. When they call your lot number, step on the scale. Once you get your weight, you’ll give them your entry total in kilos, which you should have already discussed with your coach.
The Two Hour Window
After weigh in, you get two hours to eat, relax, and start warming up. Towards the end of that window, you and your coach will begin your warm up routine. Right at the start of your lifting time, there will be intros followed by a 10 to 15 minute clock to finish warming up.
On the Platform
Depending on your total, you’ll either lift first with the bar already loaded to your opening weight, or you’ll go after several other athletes. If you have a coach, they’re handling all the logistics: loading the bar, telling you what weight you’re taking, and managing when you lift. Your job is simple: when your coach says go, you go lift.
You’ll get three attempts at the snatch and three attempts at the clean and jerk. If you miss a lift and no one else is attempting that weight, you get a two minute clock to try again. If another athlete is taking the same weight, they’ll go first, then you’ll get your second attempt.
Platform Assignment
You’ll pick a platform, usually towards the back, and stay there for the session. Depending on the size of the meet and session, you might share a platform with other athletes from your team, another team or have one to yourself.
That’s it! You’re ready to compete. Show up prepared, trust your training, and have fun out there.
